한자어로는 지초(芝草)·자초(紫草), 자근(紫根)이라고 한다. 우리나라에 자생하는 여러해살이식물로 뿌리는 자줏빛을 띠며, 예전부터 천연염료를 얻거나 민간요법에서 약재로 많이 사용했다. 진도에서는 홍주(紅酒)의 원료로 사용한다.
[용도]
지치는 염색 외에 나물로도 사용하고 약식이나 술을 내릴 때와 같이 식용색소로도 이용한다. 29개의 지치과 식물 가운데 25개가 식용과 약용이다. 약용으로는 내건성(耐乾性)과 내충성(耐蟲性)이 있어서 건위(健胃)·해독·화상·동상에 이용하며, 염색천을 피부에 대면 창독(瘡毒)이 제거되고 종물(腫物)이 생기지 않는다고 한다.
