예부터 자위를 대열(大悅)이라고 했는데, 대(大)자를 분해하면, '一+人'이 되므로 곧 혼자만의 기쁨이란 뜻이고, 성교는 천열(天悅)이라고 해서 두 사람(二+人)이 누리는 기쁨이라는 뜻이다. 이 말 속에는 자위와 성교의 차이가 함축성 있게 내포되어 있다고 말할 수 있다.
