학문과 예술의 가치는 실천과 공유에 있다. 조형 예술의 한 영역인 서예도 이 범주에서 예외가 아니다. 그런데 필자가 표방하는 ‘라이브 서예’란 필자가 새로 만든 용어로, 라이브 콘서트 또는 라이브 쇼라는 말에서 보듯이 공공장소에서 실제 붓글씨를 써 보임으로써 서예가와 관중이 함께 즐기는 서예의 한 영역을 가리키는 말이다. 곧, 서예의 실천과 공유적인 면에서 붙인 말이다.
굳이 달리 표현한다면 휘호(揮毫), 낙서(樂書) 또는 생서(生書)라고 할 수 있다. 붓을 마음먹은 대로 휘두르며 글씨를 쓴다는 의미에서는 휘호(揮毫)이고, 글씨를 즐긴다는 점에서는 낙서(樂書)이고, 글씨를 살아있는 유기체로서 본다면 생서(生書)라 할 수 있다. 사실 표구를 잘 하여 벽에 걸어 둔 멋진 글씨를 보는 것도 감흥을 주지만 점획을 긋는 매순간 손끝에 와 닿는 변화무쌍한 느낌과는 비할 바가 못 된다.
