본관 안동(安東). 자 조원(調元). 호 옥소(玉所)·백월(百越). 서울 출생. 문장가인 백부(伯父)에게서 23년간 배우고, 장인인 진위군수(振威郡守) 이세필(李世弼)에게서 경사백가(經史百家)를 배웠다. 숙종의 세자책봉 문제로 송시열(宋時烈)이 사사(賜死)되자 상소를 올려 그 억울함을 호소했다.
과거에 낙방한 후 시주(詩酒)를 벗하여 전국을 유람했다. 한시와 가사·시조에 능하여 567수의 한시를 지었으며, 그의 유고인 《옥소고(玉所稿)》 13권이 1938년에 간행되었다.
