화선지
선지라고도 한다. 동양화에 쓰이는 종이는 마지(삼베)·저지(닥종이) 등 여러 종류가 있다. 이 중 화선지가 동양화에 적당한데, 옛날 중국 선주 지방의 종이가 질이 좋다고 하여 이름이 붙여졌다. 화선지는 서예 용지로도 쓰이며, 먹을 잘 빨아들이고 또 잘 번지며 내구성도 뛰어나다. 종류도 여러 가지가 있으므로 먹이 번지는 정도를 고려하여 먹의 농담과 화선지의 관계를 잘 고려해서 선택해야 한다.
수묵화는 화선지에 먹이나 염료성 안료 등의 입자가 고운 물감을 써서 스며들고 번지는 선염법을 이용하여 그린다. 그러나 채색화를 그릴 때는 물감이 스며들거나 번질 수 없도록 화선지에 호분과 아교물, 명반을 혼합한 바탕막을 씌우는 처리를 한 위에 그린다.
또 그림의 주제에 따라 종이의 선택이 달라져야 하는데, 화조화에는 먹을 적게 흡수하는 종이가 좋고, 산수화용은 먹을 잘 흡수하는 종이가 좋다. 닥종이는 질겨 글을 쓰는 서화에 알맞으며, 마지는 두꺼우므로 채색화에 좋다. 화선지를 보관할 때는 직사광선을 피하고 습기를 잘 빨아들이므로 습기가 있는 곳은 피하는 것이 좋다. 한국에서는 전주의 화선지가 특히 좋다.
