그 흔한 貝가 돈으로 사용되었나니, 이해가 가지 않습니다.
貝가 옛날에 화폐로 사용되었다거나
귀한 것의 의미로 사용된 것은 이해가 가지 않습니다.
흔하디 흔한 게 조개가 아니었나요?

주로 하천유역이나 바닷가에서 물고기나 조개를 주식으로
삼았던 고대에는 조개를 화폐로 많이 사용했답니다.
실상 지금 같은 종이 화폐가 나온지는 얼마 안 되고,
아니 동전들도 그리 오래 되었다 볼수는 없죠.
그 전에는 물물교환을 주로 했는 데
물물교환시 조개가 차지한 비율이 높기 때문에
화폐로 인식 되어진 겁니다.
나중에는 쌀로 대체 된것을 보면
화폐는 당시의 주식을 반영한다고나 할까요?

말씀하신 내용이 다 맞는 듯하군요.
옛날에는 쌀, 베, 비단, 조개 껍데기, 화살촉 등을
실물화폐로 사용했는데,
지역에 따라 달랐겠지요?
강가나 바닷가 쪽은 조개로,
농촌에서는 베 또는 쌀을,
그리고 귀족끼리는 비단을 화폐로 사용하지 않았을까요?
농경사회에서 베를 화폐로 사용한 예로
가포(價布), 폐포(弊布), 포화(布貨) 따위의 말이 있습니다.
놀랍게도 貝자에는 '무늬있는 고운 비단'이란 의미도 있습니다.
그래서 貝錦(패금)이란 '고운 비단'의 의미이고
貝子, 貝貨는 화폐의 의미가 된 것이지요.
계속 더 깊이 생각해 봐야할 문제......
